I have no style

So after my experiment with the Harmony sketch pad I’ve had some small bursts of inspiration. I’ve actually been creating stuff *le gasp*

But I’ve also noticed something slightly disturbing…

Look at these. They are samples of what I’ve been doing lately. Do you see any kind of pattern or red thread between them?
If you do, please tell me ’cause I fail to see it…

All my favourite artists have their own unique style, and that style is usually the reason why I love them. They have something that sets them a little bit apart from the rest. And everyone who “makes it” as an artist or illustrator does so because they are special somehow.
Like this girl I know from school, Linda. She has a really unique style that she applies to everything she does. It’s simple but personal and you can recognize her stuff from a mile away. Walking past a poster she’s made, or an illustration in a window, I can tell right away that it’s Lindas work.

I have nothing like that. As it is now I’m just playing around all over the place. Not that I’m planning on becoming a famous artist or anything, but I wish I had a distinct style. Some kind of direction. A trademark I could practise to perfection. I’m rather great at one thing than mediocre at many.
But I have no idea where to even start.
How do you pick a style? Can you even do it? Shouldn’t it come natural? Gah, I’m so confused

I love all of your artwork. When you’re that good, I don’t think having a specific style should matter. ;) Your talent is your style.

I knew they were yours. You have your own style, though I can’t tell you what it is, Karin. But then I usually can tell who makes things. I can even tell who made the websites usually, though sometimes I am wrong about those, lol.

I do seem some similarities between the third and fourth photos, although i can’t really describe it. Personally, I think these are just amazing, and I wouldn’t worry about “having your own style”. If anything, it’s only through trying different techniques that you’ll find your niche.

So the last person you drew, isn’t anyone you know? Because he’s hot.

Ohh me like den nya layouten!

Hello! I don’t think I’ve commented here before, but I love your artwork, so I thought I should start. (I like too draw as well, so your blog appeals to me.)

I can’t really get a feel for one particular style in your work, especially not from four isolated images, but I think that’s something to be celebrated. Your work has a wide range of styles. You have the more technical styles of the first two images, and the more loose of the last two.

I think it’s best to be in the middle style wise, because on one side of the spectrum, with too much consistency in style, sometimes people’s work gets dull and repetitive after while, and on the other end, with little consistency, the work can seem uninteresting because of a lack of familiarity. These days, I think I’m on the former half of the spectrum, which is a pity. I feel like I draw the same things over and over again.

Taking a brief look at your gallery, I can definitely see some common threads in you work. You just happen to have multiple approaches. For example, in “Witch way,” “Autumn elf” and “Skade, female troll,” I see a particular style in your depiction of eyes and mouths.

I hope that gives you some new perspective into your work! You should be proud. You’re quite talented! :)

I think if you continue playing around with different styles and stuff you will find your signature style. I think there is something similar about all of your drawings but I can’t decide what it is exactly.

I think it’s pretty cool that you can draw/create in multiple styles. I understand what you mean about having a certain style that stands out but it’s also cool that you can adapt your style to what you’re trying to create. It gives you more range in your art in my opinion!

    BTW, I want that girl’s handbag…..cute!!

Honestly i don’t see anything disturbing in those images – all i see is that they look really gorgeous & they’re all very different from each other – & that’s real talent because you’re so versatile :)

I’m sure that with practice you’ll be able to find your signature style ;) some of us just find it before others :3 don’t give up!

I really can’t help you with the questions you have because I’m not an artist. I can see a red line in your traditional art section. And I really like it when you combine that traditional art with your layouts – it’s got something surreal and I think it looks really nice.

i used to feel like that.. like i didn’t have a style.. but it’s there you just have to develop it. draw the things you want to draw most, decorate them the way you feel they should look. no one’s idea is exactly the same! ;)

also thanks for the mlp unicorn! http://www.miseducated.net/?p=5803

i love your website here!

I’m far from an expert when it comes to art, but I think you do have a distinct style. Maybe it’s not completely developed to the point where it’s strikingly obvious, but I definitely think it’s there. The way you use colors and your smooth, bold lines are two things that stand out.

Regardless, though, you’re definitely talented. I love it when you post art because your drawings are some of my favorite to look at. I love that drawing of yourself that you posted. I want that dress and those shoes in real life! :P

Thank you all for your nice and thoughtful comments
I guess it’s just a matter of time and practice and my style will come. Or it’s just like Angelica says, that some people become known for one style even though they create art in many other styles as well. Time will tell ;)
